09.04.2017 Arctic foxes is showing nocturnal activity like other foxes
Beween 5.03.2017 and 8.04.2017 (5 weeks) we had installed three PIR and IR cameras out of the forest where one week before was showing one response to bioacoustic stimulation, the first bio-acoustic stimulation monitoring session addressed to arctic foxes species in Iceland. The BAM results were shared with researchers from Icelandic Institute of Natural History (NÁTTÚRUFRÆÐISTOFNUN ÍSLANDS), Dr Ester Rut Unnsteinsdóttir and Dr Ólafur Karl Nielsen. 26.02.2017 Bio-acoustic monitoring, tried to arctic fox species
For first time I used a megaphone etrion MR 800g 50Watt with broadcasted playback from 7 calling stations and in one station, I heard a barking sound probably coming from an arctic fox. All other calling stations didn´t show responses to the broadcasted arctic fox sounds. This technique was used in Europe for other mesocarnivore, the golden jackal (Canis aureus) since 2001. It was introduced in Europe by Giorgos Giannatos and now is largely used in golden jackal population ecology in Greece, Hungary, Serbia, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia and recently Denmark.
11.02.2017 Arctic fox was recorded again in the control area, gyrfalcon was the actor
After 3 weeks (21st of January to 11th of February 2017) we checked the control area and we obtained images from three different camera traps. The fourth one couldn't be find due to the weather conditions and remained to record the specific ecological system.
Results: we were able to record bird species of the main arctic fox ecological relations: Lagopus muta (Rock Ptarmigan), Falco rusticolus (Gyrfalcon) and Vulpes lagopus (the Arctic Fox).
By surprise, it seems that our presumption that foxes are hunting on ptarmigans was not fulfilled and probably the ptarmigan was attacked by the gyrfalcon and after that the arctic fox only scavenged on it. When we arrived on 11th of January 2017, there were only feathers and few bones with still fresh intestines. VIDEO here.
21.01.2017 Arctic Fox control area, monitoring site
In the area of Skorradalsvatn in Vatnhornsskógur Nature Reserve (the oldest birch settler forest in Iceland) a team of Ecology Department Crispus NGO Sibiu formed by Ovidiu Banea and Pablo Botella Lucena installed 4 camera-traps with 50/100 m rectangular placement. Ptarmigan droppings were observed in the field and the video laboratory was installed close to a small water stream at about 200 m altitude. The main purpose is to establish an area of interest, the future arctic fox control area in Iceland.
